Backup & Storage

Everything about the data on your device — exporting a backup, restoring one, and starting fresh.

Because your work lives on your machine, you're in control of it — which also means it's worth backing up. From Settings you can export your entire library to a single file, bring it back whenever you need to, see exactly where your data is stored, and, if you ever need to, wipe everything and start clean.

Settings — backup, restore, and storage

Quick start
  1. 1Open Settings from your avatar menu and go to Storage & data.
  2. 2Click Export .muse to save your whole library to a single backup file.
  3. 3To restore, click Import .muse and choose a backup — you'll see a summary before confirming, and a safety copy of your current data is saved automatically first.
  4. 4Keep the occasional backup somewhere safe, especially before big changes.

In Settings → Storage & data

  • Export .muse — save your whole library, including chapter snapshots, revision passes, writing targets, sessions, and the progress ledger, to one portable backup file
  • Import .muse — restore a backup, with a summary of what's inside before you commit; your current data is saved as a safety copy first, so a wrong file is never the end of the story
  • Data location — see exactly where ChapterMuse keeps your work on disk
  • Size on disk — a breakdown of what's using space, with chapter snapshots, revision passes, and the writing ledger reported separately
  • Clear History removes ordinary snapshots only; protected revision checkpoints remain attached to their revision records
  • Storage tools also include a sweep to clear unused images and per-episode podcast audio formats
  • Podcast audio is compressed locally to the most portable format the device can both create and play — AAC/MP4 first, then Opus/WebM — and the original WAV is only replaced when the completed result is smaller; unsupported devices keep WAV safely and transferred episodes report an honest playback warning instead of failing silently
  • Wipe all data — clear everything on the device to start fresh (this can't be undone)

More in Settings

  • Account — your profile, current tier, entering or changing a licence key, and Sign out
  • Appearance — the interface palette and page colour, applied across the whole app
  • Editor — the "opener prompt" toggle, which shows a genre-matched line above the first empty paragraph of a fresh chapter
  • Read aloud — install the on-device voice, preview every voice, and choose the one narration uses
  • About — the app version and a couple of handy links

A .musebackup is a single, portable file that's entirely yours. Export it, keep it somewhere safe, and import it whenever you want your whole library back — by hand, with no accounts or connection involved.

Every great story starts with a single sentence.
