Chapter Pulse
See the shape of your chapter — where it tightens, where it breathes, and how its energy moves.
Pacing is hard to feel from inside a chapter. Chapter Pulse draws it as a curve: paragraph by paragraph, it scores tension, action, dialogue, interior thought, and exposition, and layers them into a graph you can read at a glance. A flat stretch or a relentless spike jumps out immediately.
Chapter Pulse — the narrative energy curve
- 1Open a chapter in Single chapter view, then choose Chapter Pulse from the Review menu.
- 2The curve draws itself from your chapter — Tension shows first.
- 3Toggle layers on and off — add Dialogue, Action, Interior, or Exposition.
- 4Click a point on the curve to jump to that paragraph.
Chapter Pulse maps one chapter at a time. It is disabled in Continuous manuscript; switch to Single chapter to draw the active chapter's curve.
Reading the Pulse
- Five signals scored per paragraph: tension, dialogue, action, interior, and exposition
- Layer any combination onto the curve to compare them
- Turn every curve off to see each paragraph as a bar coloured by its dominant signal
- Click any point or bar to jump straight to that paragraph
- Scoring reads across paragraphs, so momentum carries from one beat to the next
Watch for long flat runs of a single colour. A chapter that's all interior thought or all dialogue often wants a change of gear — the pulse makes that easy to spot.
In a book-scoped chat, Muse can read the latest saved Pulse and compare its curve with a saved Chapter Analysis. It uses the report already on your device and does not generate a new Pulse; only the ordinary Muse chat reply is metered.
