Universes & the Folio

A universe is one continuity — one set of rules and one shared world. The Folio shows it as a living, bound edition.

A universe is a home for your work — and it's just as valuable for a single novel as it is for a sprawling series. It gathers a book and its world-building in one place, and when a second book joins the continuity, the same character can appear across all of them without being duplicated. Open a universe and you get its Folio: a special-edition view with an art-directed hero, a stats slip, and shelves for cast, places, factions, items, scenes, and notes.

A universe Folio — hero plate and shelves

Quick start
  1. 1Open Universes from Story World.
  2. 2Pick a universe from the switcher, or create a new one.
  3. 3Scroll the shelves — Cast, Places, Factions, Items, Scenes, Reviews, Last Written, and Marginalia.
  4. 4Click any card to open its sheet without leaving the Folio.
  5. 5Press N (or "+ New note") to jot a piece of Marginalia.

The Folio Shelves

  • Cast — your characters in reading order; pin the ones you reach for most, or open the relationship tapestry from the shelf header
  • Places, Factions, Items — the rest of your world, each card opening its sheet
  • Scenes — every scene across the universe, grouped by book
  • Reviews — the warm notes from your Chapter Analysis reads, gathered as an editor's reel (appears once you've run some analysis)
  • Last Written — the most recent thing you wrote, with a jump-back link
  • Marginalia — dated notes you pin to the world itself, in three kinds: lore, rules, and timeline
  • The colophon slip — a "World complete" score plus word count, book count, and cast totals at a glance

Managing Universes

  • Create a universe from the switcher or the Bookshelf
  • Rename it inline, and give it an accent colour that themes the whole Folio
  • Assign books to a universe (or leave them standalone) from the Bookshelf
  • Merge two universes into one when a world grows together
  • Genre-aware copy — the Folio's language adapts to the tone of your books

World Complete

The colophon shows a single World completepercentage — a friendly measure of how fully realised your world is. It's a craft rubric, weighted for the genre of your books, that rewards a rounded world: developed cast and places, relationships drawn, scenes planned, and Marginalia that captures your lore, rules, and timeline. Hover the score to see which parts are pulling it up or down. It's a nudge, never a grade — chase it as far as it's useful and no further.

Only one detail panel opens at a time in the Folio. Open a character sheet, then a location, and the character sheet steps aside — so the world never gets cluttered.

Every great story starts with a single sentence.
