Chapter History
Automatic, on-device version history for each chapter — scrub back through time and restore any point, safely.
You never have to worry about losing a good version of a chapter. As you write, ChapterMuse takes quiet snapshots in the background — and you can take one yourself any time. Open Chapter History and your past versions appear on a timeline right beside your living page, so you can scrub back, compare, and restore with confidence. It all happens on your own machine, and costs nothing.
Chapter History — past versions on a timeline beside your page
- 1Open Chapter History from the clock button immediately after Redo, or press Ctrl H.
- 2A timeline appears down the right edge — oldest at the top, "Now" at the bottom.
- 3When the timeline fills, scroll it without disturbing the pages; click a marker or drag along the line to view that version beside your current text.
- 4Happy with an older version? Click Restore, confirm the change, and if you change your mind Ctrl Z undoes it.
How Snapshots Are Made
- Automatically as you write — when you switch chapters, and after a natural pause in typing
- Automatically before risky moments — before you split a chapter, and before you restore an older version
- Manually — press the camera button; its popover lets you optionally name the version and choose a timeline icon — bookmark, star, flag, smile, heart, milestone, or needs-work
- Identical or empty chapters aren't snapshotted, and automatic snapshots space themselves out so the history stays readable
Reading & Restoring
- The history opens as a second page beside your chapter, typeset exactly like the real one
- Timeline markers keep a readable minimum gap; longer histories scroll independently with no visible scrollbar
- A word-level comparison marks added and removed language, moved or recreated paragraphs, and the total word change
- Edit a manual snapshot’s name and icon later so important turning points remain easy to recognise
- Pin a snapshot to keep it forever; delete ones you no longer need (your chapter itself is never touched)
- Restore uses the app confirmation modal, then snapshots your current text before replacing it, so nothing is lost and one Ctrl Z unwinds the whole restore
ChapterMuse keeps a rolling set of recent automatic snapshots plus your manual ones, so history stays useful without growing forever. Pin the versions that matter — a pinned snapshot is never cleared away.
