Read & Edit Modes
Compose in Edit mode; review your prose the way a reader will in Read mode.
The same chapter has two faces. Edit mode is where you write, with block menus and formatting at hand. Read mode strips all of that away and typesets your prose like a finished book — serif type, proper indents, no controls — so you can judge the rhythm of what you've written. Switch between them from the toolbar.
Your default writing state. Click any paragraph to edit it. Formatting controls are active. Paragraph tips and AI inline markers appear here.
A clean reading view — no editing, no distractions. Great for reviewing what you've written or sharing a chapter with a beta reader.
The same chapter in Edit and Read modes
- 1Write as usual in Edit mode — the default.
- 2Click the Read mode button in the toolbar to switch to the clean reading view.
- 3Read your chapter without any editing chrome in the way.
- 4Click Edit mode to return to composing.
Good to Know
- Read mode applies manuscript typesetting — first paragraphs flush, following ones indented
- Font, size, and line spacing are set separately for each mode, and remembered per book
- Read mode is perfect for a final pass or for sharing a chapter with a beta reader
- All editing controls are hidden in Read mode, so there's nothing to accidentally change
Tune the two modes independently in Appearance — a comfortable, larger Read setting is great for proofing, while a tighter Edit setting keeps more of your draft on screen.
